Notes

[N1] In the 1790 Census of Harford Co MD listed with 2 males over 16, and 2 females.

In the 1800 Census was in Prince Georges Co MD listed with 1 male 26-45, 1 male 10-16, 1 male under 10, 3 females under 10, 1 female 10 to 16 and one female 26-45.

An article in "Morford Historian" by Mrs. Enid Adams claims there is proof he was a son of Thomas Garrison Morford. An Obediah Moffitt married (lic.) 24 Oct 1816 to Elizabeth Chenoworth in Baltimore Co.

[N2] Thomas Morford and Stephen Morford are listed together in a 1773 list of taxables of the Back River Upper Hundred taken by William Hutson.

A list of taxables in St Pauls Parish, Baltimore Co in 1774 shows a Thomas Morfoot, Drayman, in the Westminister Hundred. Another list of 1786 by Rev. Dr. West show a Thomas Moffett in the Baltimore West Hunded. It is uncertain if all references are to the same man or not. There are no Morford, Moffett Mofit or any other variations of the name in Baltimore Co land records up through 1775.

There is some evidence that there maybe more to the family than thought.
There is an obituary for Morfit that lists as brothers a T. Garrison Morfit and a Dr. John C. Morfit living in St. Louis in 1854. A Henry Mason Morfit was a member of MD legislature in 1861 died 1 Dec 1865 with an obit in the Baltimore Sun of 7 Dec 1865.

Some have listed Thomas's wife as a Jane Richardson.

Thomas Morford at one point must had been a Quaker, for he was a witness at the marriage of Aquila Price (of John and Rebecca) and Ann Griffith in 17th day of 4th month 1771.

Thomas Garrison Morford that he might have carried a letter as Thomas Morfit to Gov. Thomas Simms Lee in 1779 as in Archives of MD Vol. 43, p. 386 Also he kept a tavern on Old Harford Rd near Long Green and deed "Nancy's Gift" to son Obadiah in 1794 of 43 acres on which he was taxed in 1783

All above from Lee email of 29-June-2001

Thomas Garrison Morford {Maffitt} Lived on an estate in Eastern Baltimore (later to become Harford County in 1779). I don't have his wife's name. One Morford genealogy states that a family tradition says he married a Richardson. According to notes I took from Grandmother in 1962 the spelling was also listed as Morfett & Morfoot as well as Morford.

According to a Geneology abstract of early american marriages they list a Thomas Morford marrying a Susannah Leonard, but it doesn't list the state or date (1567004 P). One article cites this as a misinteruptation of a will, where Susanah, sister of a Thomas Morford married a Henry Leonard and Thomas was referred to as a brother-in-law in Henry Leonard's will in 1739. The Thomas referred to here, according to some research might be the uncle of Thomas Garrison Morford. There is a Charles Morfett who apparently came to Maryland in 1650, a John Morfit who came in 1663 and a William Morfett who came to Md in 1679. In Balto. Marriage licenses 1777-1799, shows Thomas Morford m. Hannah Presbury 29 Jan 1783. This is apparently Thomas Garrison Morford remarrying, as this might explain his baptism at age 61. Hannah was apparently the widow of John Presbury, as Harford Co. Probate records for Harford Co. show, Thomas Maffitt, as the administrator of John Presbury's estate {Estate File 255} of 11 Feb 1783. It was common for the husband of a widow to be the administer of her former husband's estate. Nearest of kin of John Presbury where Joseph and George Presbury. Joesph Presbury's estate was administered June 19, 1783 with Joesph Presbury administer (son?), nearest of kin were Henry Weatherall and James Weathrall. Hardford Co records all show the estate of an Andrew Moffett (Morfit) {Estate File 101} filed 8 January 1777, the administrator was Billingsley Roberts.

In the 1776 Census of Harford Co in the Broad Creed Hundred is listed James Mafford, with 4 (whites).

In the 1783 tax list for Harford Co in the Gunpowder Upper and Lower Hundred there are two entries for Thomas Marford: one listing the number of inhabitants as 0 (an unihabited tract of land?) and the other Thomas Marford (Forest) 6 inhabitants. The first listing from 1783 Harford Co lists the land as Nancy's Gift a 43 acre tract note:leased forest, HA Gunpowder Upper and Lower Hundred, (p. 67 MSA S-1161-6-7 (1/4/5/49). The second listing shows James Marford with the tract of land Oxford Resurveyd 111 acres in HA Gunpowder Upper and Lower Hundreds (also on p.67 of MSA S-1161-6-7 1/4/5/49) in 1783 we find John Marford listed as a bachelor in the Deer Creek Middle Hundred, with James Kelly as security. The cite for this reference is p 97 MSA S-1161-6-5 1/4/4/49) Thomas Garrison Morford might have carried a letter as Thomas Morfit to Gov. Thomas Simms Lee in 1779 as in Archives of MD Vol. 43, p. 386 Also he kept a tavern on Old Harford Rd near Long Green and deed "Nancy's Gift" to son Obadiah in 1794 of 43 acres on which he was taxed in 1783.

There are genealogies of the Morford family of Monmouth Co NJ which place Thomas Garrison Morford of MD as a son of John Morford and Abigail of Monmouth Co. It is also stated that the New Jersey family had its roots in MD. One of these genealogies appears in the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, September 1983, "Whose Morford Was He John's or Tom's" by Enid Adams. Curiously, the dates in this article for Thomas Garrison Morford (1737 to 1820) are also those that are in our family history. A John Morfit was transported to MD along with others by 1663 by George Richardson of Maryland {6:90}. In the 1700 tax list for Baltimore Co. a John Murford is on the North Side of the Gunpowder Hundred. The above genealogy places Stephen Morford of MD as a brother of Thomas Garrison, However, there is unfortantly any proof of this part of the family. Apparently part of this information comes from family tradition of a Zebulon Morford of PA which says he was a brother of Thomas Garrison Morford and son of John Morford. The other genealogies on the Morford family: Curtis R. Morford "HIstory of the Morford Family" July 1, 1892 Shenago Valley News Print, Greenville PA. LDS Microfilm #982376, and Update to "History of the Morford Family" by Mrs. Wayne Treat 1974, Mrs. Adams published a Morford Genealogy newsletter called "Morford Historian"

The NJ Morford family linage starts with two brother: John and Thomas, it is speculated that they came to NJ from MD. John Morford was in NJ by 1676 when he was granted 120 acres of land, and in 1677 received an additional 139 acres. His wife was named Margaret (from a 1710 deed), who may have died by 1720 since she did not sign deeds then. The last record of John was a deed he executed 16 Sept 1729.

In 1700/1704 John and Margaret moved to Cranbury, Middlesex Co. NJ.

22. THOMAS GARRISON MORFORD, by tradition a son of John Morford (#8), born 17 June 1738, perhaps in New Jersey; baptised as an adult 6 April 1800 at St. James Parish, Baltimore, Maryland; said to have died in 1820. Family tradition gives his first wife as Jane Richardson. [Might she have been a descendant of George Richardson who imported John1 Morfit from England to Maryland in 1663?] She was probably the mother of all of Thomas' children, and died prior to 29 January 1783 when Thomas, then over 44, married Hannah Presbury, daughter of Thomas Presbury. [The latter may have been the Thomas P. Presbury of Spesutia Upper Hundred in 1783, just north of Gunpowder Upper and Lower Hundreds where the Morford land was located.] A genealogical researcher, the late Mrs. Catherine Klein of Baltimore, stated that Thomas Morford
was said to have come from New Jersey into York County, Pennsylvania, and thence to Harford County, Maryland, where he kept a tavern on the Old Harford Road, "near the Long Green Valley," around 1776. Deeds show his occupation as "wheelwright" and "wagon wheelwright,"

Known and probable children (list may be incomplete):
63. Obadiah (a known son), to whom Thomas deeded in 1794 a 43-acre tract of land known as "Nancy's Gift" (on which Thomas had been taxed in 1783). In 1790 Obadiah was living in Harford Co., Md., with 2 white males over 16 and 2 females in his family; the 1800 census of Prince Georges County, Md., shows an Obadiah Morford and wife (both born 1755-74), a son and a daughter born 1784-90, 3 sons and a daughter born 1790-1800. [Was he the same person as the
Obediah "Moffitt" who m. 24 Oct. 1816, in Baltimore, Elizabeth Chenoweth? If so, it would have been a second marriage for him.]
64. Isaiah, born about 1760s, is shown in the 1790 census of Harford Co., Md., a near neighbor to his presumed younger brother, Thomas Morford. His family consisted of 2 males over 16, 1 male under 16, and 2 females, one probably his wife. He is believed to have been the "Josiah" (a probable misreading of his name) shown in Clift's Second Census of Kentucky,
1800, reconstructed from tax lists, which shows "Josiah," Thomas, and a George Mofford, in Mason County. In the 1810 Bracken Co. census is shown Isaiah Mofford, age over 45, with one male 10/16 (born 1794-1800), 4 males under 10, and 1 female born 1784-94. Presumed children: Jean, born say in the 1780s, m. 23 Dec. 1806 in Bracken Co., John McTigret;
John, born 9 June 1792 in Maryland, m. 29 Sept. 1811 in Brown Co., Ohio, Phoebe Tharp. Isaiah died intestate in August 1815, and Mary Morford, her identity not yet determined, was administratrix (Bracken Co. Record books A:418, B:331).
65. John, born 12 Feb. 1766, place not known, died 24 May 1837, Newcastle, Coshocton Co., Ohio, his 3d wife Ellen surviving him. He married three times (all marriages in Baltimore, Md.): 1st 15 Feb. 1784 to Nancy Kelly, 2d 7 Nov. 1794 to Susanna "Sukey" Chamberlain, 3d 13 Feb. 1817 to Eleanor ("Ellen" or "Nelly") (Chamberlain) Eagen; the last two wives believed to have been daughters of Philip and Sarah (Gittings) Chamberlain of Harford Co., Md. Child by 1st wife: William 1787-1872, m. 1814 in York Co., Pa., Mary C. Fulks. Children by 2d wife: James Chamberlain, 1795-1888, m. 1st 1822 Elizabeth Fowler, 2d 1840 Ruth Ann Biddison; Harriet, born 1797, m. Levi Plowman; Jane, born 1800, m. 1820. York Co., Pa., John Fulks; Ann, m. Mr. Divin; Elizabeth, died 1817/8; Cassandra; Sarah Chamberlaine, 1808-1830, m. 1826, Baltimore, Md., Richard Chilcoat; Philip C[hamberlaine?], 1808-1867, m. 1st ca. 1828 Lizzie Webber, 2d 1834 Mary E. Shopple; Thomas, born ca. 1809, m. 9 Dec. 1829, in Baltimore, Elizabeth Brooks; Mary, m. 28 Apr.1833, in York Co., Pa.,
John Gardiner. There were probably two children by John's third wife, their names not discovered.
66. Thomas, born 8 Feb. 1773, probably in Harford Co., Md., died 24 Jan. 1815, Adams Co., Ohio, m. 1st 22 Sept. 1796, prob. in Maryland, Temperance Robinson, born 10 Feb.1777, died 22 Nov. 1810, perhaps in Washington, Bracken Co., Ky. Thomas Morford m. 2d 24 December 1811, at Mt. Union, Adams Co., Ohio, Frances "Fanny" Rachford, who survived him and m. 2d 1820, James Erwin, 1763-1849 (Historical Collections of Brown Co., Ohio, Carl N. Thompson, p. 516). Children of Thomas Morford, all by first wife: Kennard, 1798-1857, m. 20 May 1822, Adams Co., Ohio, Ann Birket; William R[obinson?], 1800-1851, m. Rebecca Isabella [Dugan?]; Margaret, 1802-1874, m. 1824 at Cincinnati, Ohio, Andrew
Jackson Cox; Robinson, 1805-1882, m. 1st 1826 Elizabeth Norris, 2d Nancy Slayton, 3d Mary Slayton; Catherine, 1808-1891, m. 1830 James Meteer Eakins. (Morford Historian, April 1982, p. 78.)

Main St., St. Charles, with a service immediately following. Jim was born Feb. 3, 1944, in Chicago, to Leo and Anna. After many heart issues over the past years, he entered eternal life June 1, 2010. A standout athlete as a youth, Jim competed in baseball, basketball, football and track at Luther High North. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force and spent time in Japan. He was employed at AT&T for over 30 years. Bowling, Elvis and the Cubs were what made him who he was. He ran the North End Junior Traveling League for 25 years. Thousands of young bowlers experienced his instruction and guidance. Many of them would return years later just to thank him for the wonderful time they had. An Elvis fan from the beginning, his basement was covered with pictures, albums and posters of all things Elvis. When his kids took him to Graceland, you could just see the wonder and joy in his eyes. Every place he entered would remind him of the story of what it was like when Elvis was there. A Cubs fan his entire life, watching a game with him you knew his mood would change with every pitch. A bad play or bad at-bat would bring out a groan in disgust. But all could change with the next pitch, a home run or great play would cause him to let out a loud cheer. He is survived by his children, Jim (Debbie) Dreyer, Debbie (Thad) Royer, Traycie (Jason) Nigoza; grandchildren, Jack, Katie and Maddie Royer; Alyce married to for 34 years; nieces and nephews, Mark, Scott, Linda, Tim, Anna and Rachael; beloved friend, Arlene Knauft; and many other dear friends. [N137] On February 27, 1976, Mrs. Philip E. Cartright, Route 2, Box 151, New Castle, IN 47362, wrote my grandmother, Frankie Roberts (Nee Burton), asking for genalogy information on the Morford line. She signed the letter Ruth Mattox Cartright.

If I have guessed correctly, Ruth was born 6Feb1925 and died 26Jun1991

I believe this is the same Ruth E. Mattix found in 1930 livin with her parents Raymond and Marine

From the Morford Historian, Volume 1, Number 2 under descendents of Thomas Morford (1737-1820)
Ruth (Mattox) Cartright, New Castle IN
George R. Mattox - Geo. R. Mattox Sr,; Mary Ellen (Morford) Mattox; Phillip Morford John & Thomas.
This means:
1) Ruth is George R's daughter
2) Raymond is George Raymond Jr.
3) His father was George Raymond Sr.

[N136] Could be Ray Mattox. Pure speculation based on:
1) A George R Mattox married an Ella E. Rossey on 14Dec1901 in Marion, IN
2) 1920 Census for Marion has George and Ella with kids Raymond, Robert & Freda
3) 1930 Census has Ray with Marine and Ruth E. Mattix in New Castle, Henry, IN... the right place

[N49] Buried in All Saints Cemetery
Death certificate for Mae Daley has the same Month and Day for DOB as Ona M. Morford I had established from the 1900 census. Therefore I conclude that Mae is Ona Mae Morford and I will delete the separate entries for each person.

1930 Federal Census: Chicago, Cook Co., IL; T626 ROll 489; Page: 12B; ED: 1752, Age is 32 and Place of Birth MO

I had previously made this note under Ona Morford:
3-Jan-2001
I have multiple sources that say there were only 5 siblings. I can't find Mae anywhere but I know Ona's middle initial is M. Olive also went by her middle name in the 1900 census. Harry's wife Marge is certain that Ona is Ona Mae. So that's what I'm putting. Could be Mae Ona. More later.

All notes below were written before I obtained Mae's death certificate...
DoD: Not mentioned in Bert Morford's 1957 obit. but listed in 1930 census.

I am pretty sure Mae is Ona M. Morford.
Found May Daley living as a Guest or Nurse (can't read very well) at the home of Wilfred Kellog in Cook County, IL in 1920
Has a daughter Eleanor who age is 6/12 (as of January 1920). May is 22. Born in Missouri. Married but no husband nearby. The age is exactly correct and so is the daughter's name. Can't find Dan Daley living anywhere.
In 1930 Eleanor is listed as 9 10/12 as of April 1, 1930. If the 1920 May Daley is Dan's wife then probable marriage date and birthdate of 1st child are prior to 1920.

I suspect Ida married Ross Day. There is an Ida Day in 1900 census (Poe township, Ringgold Co) and dates are close enough that I need to verify.

[N60] At least one researching thinks, Thomas' father may be the William Chamberlain who died in Cecil Co. MD in 1699. Thomas appears in the 1700 tax list of Baltimore Co in the Gunpowder Hundred. On 8 Nov 1703 Charles Adams, Planter of Baltimore Co., conveyed to Thomas Chamberlain of Baltimore Co. 20 acres.

On 2 Oct 1713 Thomas Chamberlain, Gentleman of Baltimore Co Maryland Mortgage to Charles Carrollof Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co. for L102.45 140 acres on Bush River purhcased of Charles Adams, 2nd tract 20 acres purchased of said Adams, two negro slaves, one man age 30 years called Sambo and one woman aged 40 years called Phillis and Chattle goods Signed Thomas Chamberlain.

On 9 August 1716 Thomas & Mary Chamberlain, gentleman of Baltimore Co MD conveyed to Richard King, merchant of Baltimore County of L 40 and for L102.45 to Charles Carroll gentleman of Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co MD 140 acres of land and 2 slaves and chattle goods. signed by Thomas Chamberlain and Mary (X) Chamberlain.

on 9 Nov 1717 Thomas Chamberlain sold to Richard King livestock, signed Thomas Chamberlain.

on 4 Jan 1705 Thomas Chamerlain and Dutton Lane witnessed a Deed from John and Mary Roberts of Baltimore Co., to John Hall. Thomas also witnessed deeds on 4 June 1706 and 6 June 1706, 4 March 1702, 9 Nov 1709, 30 Sept 1812.

In the 1840 census of the 2nd dist of Baltimore co. James Morford has one male age 15-20, one male aged 40-50, 1 female age 5-10, 2 females age 10-15, two females age 15-20 and one female age 50-60 years.

Mrs. Enid Adams seem to think this James Morford married 2nd Ruth Ann Bidderson lic dated, 12 Oct 1840 in Baltimore Co. James was one of the last surviving "old defenders" from the war of 1812 in Baltimore. The History of Baltimore 1729-1898 claimed (erroneously) that James Morford was the last to honor the battle of northpoint with the parade in cocladed hats, where he was too feeble to walk and had to be driven around in a hack.

Mary Ellen's death certificate indicates father was born in Ohio

From "Morford Historian": Moved West, to Champaign Co., OH and died in Indiana.
On 16 Nov 1829 he is listed as a member of the Falls Circuit of the Methodist Church in Baltimore.
I have concerns about "Champaign, OH" because Jeremiah Morford was married in "Champaign IL" and Andrew was born there. Champaign OH, Indianapolis IN and Champaign IL are in a straight, east / west line, 250 miles from end to end. And my Morfords have history in at least IL and Indianapolis... maybe all 3.

[N74] Per Bert Morford Obit of 1957, Grace Wertz was living in Bronson, Miss.
Marge (wife of Harry R) Morford thought Grace lived in MO, not MS.
I found Thomas and Grace living in Taney County, location of Branson, MO.

I had originally taken Grace's DoB from the 1900 Census as October 1879. However, I found Alice Boltz living with Pearly Boltz in 1880. Pearly is listed a being 2 months old and born in April, 1880, After I received Grace's death certificate I have confirmed her DoB as April, although the year is listed as 1882. I believe Grace P. Davis is Grace Pearl Davis or Boltz.

Found as Pearly Boltz in 1880 census
Listed as Grace P. Davis on marriage license

1900 Federal Census, Union, Daviess, Missouri
Nancy L. Wirtz, Sept 1842, 57, Widowed, 3 children, 2 alive, MO, TN, OH
Fanny S. Daughter, Jan 1886, 34, S, MO, PA, MO, Dressmaker
Thomas J., Son, May 1872, 28, M, married 2 years, MO, PA, MO, Farmer
Grace, D-in-law, Oct 1879, 20, M 2, MO, MO, PA, Millner?

I found a "Pearly Boltz" living with Alice and her parents in 1880. Could this be Grace P. Davis? Birthdate is wrong, born in April 1880 vs. Oct 1879.
Pearly Boltz, 2/12. Born in Apr, Grand Dau, MO, KY, OH.
Father was born in KY and no Boltz men were. Alice was born in OH.

Interesting that in 1910 her father's place of birth is United States. Maybe she didn't know who her father was?

[N81] Worked for Star Airlines, predecessor to Alaska Airlines (pre-war). Killed in South America flying war goods. - This I know from family talks. Kenny was apparently a very well liked person in the Morford family and although he died 10 years before I was born, I still heard a lot about him growing up.

From v45t1234.FTW: Kennith Neese was killed the 13 of March 1942 as he was starting to cross the ocean from the coast off Brazil. He was in government service operating a plane, had been for several years. - I am not certain how accurate this is. I believe Kenny was killed when his plane failed to make it over some mountains. I know it took a few years before the body was returned to the states.

Isaac Burton is Emsley's father -- see 1800 NC census, Guilford Co, 1810 Rowan Co. According to records found in Genealogical Journal of the Genealogical Society of Davidson County, vol. 9, #4, Fall 1989, John Burton, who gave bond with E. Burton and Joseph Albertson for L200, per Rowan Co. Court held in Lexington 1819-1822, for the administration on the estate of Isaac Burton was granted. John appears to be an older brother to Emsley. I also believe that there were brothers Basil (spelled various ways), Joshua, Thomas and Jesse. They all lived in close proximity to one another. The document I found where Isaac gave Emsley land was the clencher. People didn't just give land to 'friends' Given in Feb. 1816, it was likely a wedding gift.
DEEDS Recorded - Feb. Session 1816, Isaac Burton to Emsley Burton deed for 173 acres of land; dated 13 February 1816, proven by Joshua Burton, p. 122 Rowan Co. Court Pleas and Quarter Sessions.

[N250] Eanne confirms Date and location of marriage

[N105] I received the following from Joan H. Merriwether on 20-May-2004
My maternal grandmother was Lucy Ann Elkins, born 28 Aug 1870 in Greencastle, Putnam Co., Indiana. She married my grandfather, David Franklin Brown, who was born 30 Mar 1867 Jackson Co., Indiana. They were married13 may 1893 in Mitchell, Lawrence Co., Indiana.

[N106] All children and information under William Elkins is a work in progress and unverified. Information was obtained from Ancestry.com entries for the Gandalf's Genealogy Group.

Some information has also been gathered from the granddaughter of Lucy Ann Elkins. She stated:
"My maternal grandmother was Lucy Ann Elkins, born 28 Aug 1870 in Greencastle, Putnam Co., Indiana. She married my grandfather, David Franklin Brown, who was born 30 Mar 1867 Jackson Co., Indiana. They were married13 may 1893 in Mitchell, Lawrence Co., Indiana.
I looked at my group sheet for Lucy 's parents, Wilborn Elkins and Matilda Jane Collier. The only child they have born in Edgar, Ill. was Lucy 's brother Abraham Elkins; he was born 1873. So, Wilborn and Matilda evidently moved back to Indiana by 1875, as their next child Ida was born then in Jackson, Indiana."

[N107] ALL Information regarding the family of Lucy Elkins and David Brown is unverified, received via email from a granddaughter of Lucy Elkins.

According to FamilySearch.Org name was Melissa Viola AUSTIN. Was Corbett a previous marriage?

Confirmed family name is Austin from E.E. Devoe autobiography. P36 refers: " My wife's sister Deborah and her husband, from Los Angeles came to visit us on May first 1932. We had a picnic athe the Shrine Club. There were forty-three Devoes and Austins."

Corbett must be previous marriage. 1930 Census indicates age at first marriage of 19... that's cinches it.

But James is not shown in any of the censuses. Therefore, James H. must be James Horace.

[N150] "In 1845 . . . . Jeremiah Calkins removed with his family to Ulster County, NY, and changed his avocation to that of an extensive collier. There through the intrigue and chicanery of a man in whom he reposed the utmost confidence, he lost his entire fortune and had to begin life anew. He was a man of indomitable will, of sterling integrity, and his word was as good as his bond. Of the Methodist Episcopal Church he was a faithful member, and in order to be present at Divine worship, he would often walk for six miles to the place of meeting. He was beloved by all who knew him, and his death was deeply mourned. His wife, a native of Connecticut, was born March 12, 1818, and died December 12, 1839, during the infancy of our subject . . . . [N156] Lamar Democrat
Samuel Casement, after a long period of illness, succumbed at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon. Mr. Casement was born in County Down, Ireland, in February 1826. When a lad of 19 he came across to America and settled in the Province of Ontario in the Dominion of Canada. In 1848, he married an Irish lassie, named Miss Annie Jane Breckenridge. They have lived together nearly sixty years and Mrs. Casement survives her husband.
Mr. Casement early took an active part in politic. He served in the county council and also as a member of the Ootario (sic) legislature.
In 1867, he came to the United States, largely on account of his liberal sympathies. He settled near Dwight, Illinois, and lived there until 1879, and he has resided here ever since. Mr. Casement's surviving children are Jas. Casement, of Valparaoso, Nebraska, Mrs. Sarah Devoe, of Lebanon, Nebraska, Circuit Clerk R. E. Casement of this city, Tom Casement of Arkansas City, Mrs. Linnie Shaw, of Arkansas City and Misses Anna and Lou Casement of this city. Mr. Casement was an old school Presbyterian, having been a lifelong believer in that faith.

Sarah J. Casement was born in southern Canada June 20th, 1855. She moved with her parents to Livingston county, Ill. when 12 years old. where she lived until her marriage to Elmore Devoe, Feb. 29, 1880 at Kankakee, when they came to Red Willow county, settling on a homestead on the state line, southeast of Lebanon and the following year engaged in the banking business to which he has given his undivided attention ever since.
Mrs. Devoe was of a cheerful, lovable disposition, admired and esteemed by all who knew her. She had been an active member of the Presbyterian church for many years and will be sadly missed in the community.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Monday, March 6th at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Bancroft of Lincoln. Burial in Lebanon cemetery, the Royal Neighbors having a part in the services.

There are at least four origins of this name in N.America: Acadian, French-Canadian (Quebec), New York (Huguenots), and former slaves
from southern U.S. who adopted the name. The name had likely no more than two forms in France, "deVaux" and "deVeau" (or DeVaux and DeVeau). For a more completre discussion see "DeVaux". The original name should more properly be listed as "Vaux (de)". Thus listed it would be searched under "V" rather than "D" but what is done is done.

[N259] I found a marriage reccord for Anna Kenney and Jonathan Thompson for 22Feb1795 which does not match the bible. But, the residence is Richmond, NH which is only 13 miles south of Keene where Ezra says he was born. It's also right on the border with Mass where Jonathan Jr. said he was born in one of the censuses. Could the bible date be skewed early because of the arrival of Timothy only 4 months after the marriage?

1860 Census M653 #731, Chautauqua Co, Pomfret Twp, Fredonia NY, Sheet 199 (stamped page 535), Line 13
See notes on Jonathon. I BELIEVE this is the correct family.
Name listed as Elisabeth. Either Roxanna is aka Elisabeth or Jonathon was married twice.
For now, assume this is Roxanna.
Establishes DoB
Confirms Place of Birth with Ira's 1900 Census
Aka of Roxa from this census.

[H253] Dave was very consistent in his name: Dave, not David.
In the 1920 Census his older and younger siblings are all born in Colorado. Dave is born in New York.
In the 1930 census he is listed as Isaac's Step Son. He is also the only person in the family born in New York

WWII Army Records lists Dave as divorced with no dependents.

I assume his first marriage was to my Aunt Ilva, who died.

There was at least 1 more marriage and divorce by April 1942

Then I find 3 marriages in Nevada that are likely Dave.

I first met Dave in 1977. He was a pit boss in Vegas. I last met him in the mid-1980s. He was retired.

[N245] Enlisted in 1862
With Michael Barnes (Charlotte's husband)

[N246] Never married per Eanne
Eanne's info came via Hazel

[N247] I had Paul Woodruff, Eanne says full name is Roy Paul Woodruff.
DoB from Eanne.

[N248] Name from grandma's diary

Found Susan Woody: Father was William Jr. WOODY, Mother Biddy LLOYD in FamilySearch.Org Ancestral File. Had lots more info there.

1920 Census: T625, roll 1000, Nebraska, Red Willow County, Lebanon, ED 187 Page 9A, Line 14
Shows Susan A., James M. and Hampton H. all as siblings with father born in Virgina, Mother in NC.
Next door is Emmett J. Horton with father born in Virgina, Mother in NC.
Next page is Henry, John L. and Beda E. all listed as siblings with father born in Virgina, Mother in NC.
These all have to be siblings. Info on Susan Woody then is suspect.

LDS IGI marriage record to Hampton indicates birth year of 1820. Another lists birth as 1822

[N249] I think William Woody and Beda Woody are candidates for Susan's parents. Both are from NC and so was Susan. Susan named one of her daughter's Beda.

1860 Federal Census, Shauswick, Lawrence, Indiana - M653_276, page 731
Hampton Horton is married to Susan Woody and living next door to William Woody, age 69 on one side
and James Woody, age 43 on the other side

1850 Federal Census, Shawswick Twp, Lawrence, Indiana - M432_158, page 397
William Woody - 40 or 50 - NC
Beda - 40 or 50 - NC
Susanna - 26 NC
William - 20 IN
Elizabeth - 9 IN
Emily - 11 IN

[H252] The Thompson Family Bible I have lists Roxanna Williams as the wife of Jonathan Thompson. And yet all the census information shows he was married to Elizabeth. Jonathan's youngest child is Roxanna, who, according to the 1850 census was born about 1845. I found the following listing for Promfret Pioneer Cemetery: Thompson, Roxanna, w. J. Dec.30,1845,ae 39. For purposes of my investigation, I'm going to assume Jonathan was married twice. The first marriage was to Roxanna who was the mother of all the children I have listed. The second marriage was to Elizabeth, sometime after 1845 and before 1850.
