Albert Guy had a grocery store on the west side of Main Street. The story is told that Guy had a
damage bill against the railroad and could not get them to pay. When the train came in. Guy took a
log chain and padlock and chained the train to the track. The engineer had to call McCook and it
didn't take long for payment to be made. Guy then released the train.

William Halsey homesteaded on Beaver Creek in 1873. He freighted lumber and supplies from North
Platte for early settlers. He also liked to reminisce with C. S. Blair who arrived in 1884 from Iowa
and homesteaded northeast of Lebanon. One tried to out-quip the other about the size of
grasshoppers, chinch bugs. wild turkeys and hogs on their land. Blair claimed he lacked 5 cents of
having a nickel when he first came to this country.

Only walls were left standing on the west side of Main Street after the disastrous fire of 1939.
